VH1 SAVE THE MUSIC

The VH 1 Save The Music initiative is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of education in America’s public schools by restoring music programs in cities across the country, and raising public awareness about the participation for our Nation’s youth.

OUR GOAL

VH1 Save The Music is committed to bringing music instruction to one million children during the next decade.

BENEFITS OF MUSIC EDUCATION

Scientific studies have proven that music participation builds brain power in children by enhancing vital intellectual skills. As a result, music participation increases a child’s ability to learn basic math and reading, and students who participate in music programs score significantly higher on standardized tests while at the same time developing solving skills. Students involved in music are also less likely to be involved in gangs, drugs or alcohol abuse and have better attendance in school. Most importantly, students enjoy it!

Although VH1 Save The Music program, cable music channel VH1 in partnership with its affiliates, is working to restore these courses to the curriculum of our nation’s public schools by providing them with musical instruments and raising awareness both nationally and at the local level.

Music education improves:

Early cognitive development
Basic math and reading ability
Spatial reasoning skills
SAT scores
School attendance
Ability to work in teams
Knowledge of other cultures and history
Self-esteem
Self-discipline
Creativity

THE PROGRAM

The VH1 Save the Music program includes two core elements:
  • To raise public awareness on the national and local level about the benefits of music education through a national public service campaign and related network programming on VH1, reaching 70 million homes. Local awareness campaigns, fundraising and musical instrument donations are conducted in cities across the country in partnership with VH1 affiliates and local music education supporters.
  • Restore beginning instrumental music programs in local communities. Contributions to the VH1 Save The Music Foundation are used to purchase new musical instruments for public elementary schools as well as refurbished donated instruments. These donations are made to support program restorations based on the guidelines of the VH1 Save The Music Foundation.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Since its’ inception, the Foundation has implemented 350 new music programs, in 30 local communities, enriching the lives of more than 120,000 children.

The Foundation’s ten-year plan is to bring music participation to one million children in public schools. More than 90% of every dollar marked for the VH1 Save The Music Foundation finds its way into a child’s hand in the form of a musical instrument.
